How to Clean and Care for Sterling Silver Chains

Sterling silver chains last best when cleaning matches the finish and the link structure. Gentle routine care prevents buildup, reduces tangling and protects plated surfaces from unnecessary wear.

Use gentle cleaning for routine care

Wipe the chain with a clean, soft cloth after wear. For unplated sterling silver, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap, rinse thoroughly and dry every link before storage. Avoid abrasive brushes that can scratch polished surfaces or catch inside fine links.

Treat plated sterling silver differently

Rhodium, 14K gold-plated and 18K gold-plated chains should not be polished aggressively. Abrasive silver polish can thin the plated finish. Use a soft damp cloth, mild soap when needed and light pressure.

Protect flat and herringbone chains

Herringbone and other flat chains depend on aligned segments for their smooth surface. Store them flat or in a broad curve, never folded into a tight bend. Do not hang heavy pendants from a flat chain unless the product is designed for that load.

Prevent tangles and surface damage

Fasten the clasp before storage and keep each chain in a separate pouch or compartment. Keep silver away from perfume, chlorine, household cleaners and prolonged moisture. Put jewelry on after fragrance and skincare have dried.

Know when professional cleaning is safer

Choose professional cleaning when a clasp is damaged, links are kinked, stones are loose or the finish is heavily worn. Mechanical polishing can change link definition, so repair and refinishing should match the chain construction.
